Hello there LiveJournal, old buddy.

You've had a shitty year, haven't you? Poor friend. It's been a withering death for you out here in the English speaking world. I'm noticing a little flicker of new life, as if your brief absence really did make the heart grow fonder. I've missed you, I know that much. I have maybe three or four people who post with any regularity. I miss the higher degree of thoughtfulness that one sees in a LiveJournal entry, rather than the 420 characters of Facebook and the 140 of Twitter.

So let us get re-aquainted, a little. I don't think we'll quite be lovers as we were before, but at least let us be friends.

The last few months have been interesting. The Man was finally awarded his Ph. D, and has spent the last eight weeks or so slowly squishing that beautiful brain of his back into his head. It's like living with a different person, sometimes - he seems so much more relaxed and happy about the state of the world than he did this time last year, and it rubs off on me in no small amount. It's a big deal all round - he can start looking for a new job, and by the nature of things this means a relocation and a new job for me, too. I'm looking forward to the change of scenery. I'm hoping to take a few months off once we are settled again, as I have basically worked non-stop for oh, the last five or six years. The first half was my fault, and the second was in order to keep the two of us fed. Casual retail employment is not kind to people who just want to piss off for a month. I've also been demoted, promoted, relocated, shifted sideways and spun about in my workplace since my last major work related post. All in all it's been exhausting, and I'm just done with it. My health is suffering a bit - I've been sick with one thing or another since January, with only a few days here and there of health in between - and I'm mentally drained. We've had one staff crisis after another, and being the manager means you have to cop it when everything hits the fan. Weekends off area rarity and I have to book them weeks in advance, then turn my damn phone off to keep it. The later hours have not been my friend either. When I started we closed at seven through the week and five at the weekends; now I rarely get home before 11. As my pool of friends have gotten older and found sensible jobs and largely stopped such antics as wandering around the carparks of 7-11s at three in the morning dressed as leopards, I find myself increasingly without social contact beyond my flatmates and the internets.

I'm becoming disheartened around the industry, too. Not the Sex Industry part - by and large I've always been pleased with the level of professionalism in my interactions with my colleagues, and with people more deeply down in the trenches, as it were - but by the great wall of sexist, racist bullshit I spend my days bashing against. The way the market shapes the material. The way the bigotry of the general public sculpts the images in pornography to reflect this insane ideal. And when you do find people who want something more authentic, you crash headlong into the restrictions on adult media in this country. The interference of the OFLC, now called the Australian Classification Board, which gets more and more heavy-handed every year. We recently had pretty much all our magazines locked up in customs for two months due to an increasingly broad idea of what a woman under 18 looks like. The much touted "small breast ban" may not be hard legislation, but it has in the last few months resulted in nothing but magazines with titles like Juggz or Over 40 making it past the censors. Gay mags have been particularly targeted, and I haven't had a new issue of any of the all boy publications all year. I am faced with this frustrating situation where I tell customers who ask me where their preferred magazine that ACB has seized it, and a general blether about how stupid it is commences, and just when I think we are seeing eye to eye, I'll say something ridiculous like, "maybe you should rip off a letter to your MP about how stupid this is," and suddenly the look of their faces tell me completely that they'd rather take a band-saw to their crotches that admit to an MP they like a bit of titty mag now and then. It's stupid and dangerous, because it drives people online, and while I know every single girl in a copy of Penthouse is over 18 because the magazine is required to keep a copy of her birth certificate on file in perpetuity, and that she's been paid and paid well, I have no such assurance of some random image from the web. I don't know if she consented, I don't know if she got paid, I don't know if she's 16 and making the most money the quickest way she can think of. I know the Internet is for Porn, but there is a place in this world for a DVD that you know full well has been produced ethically, with consenting players, who are regularly tested for STIs and who receive adequate compensation for their work. But the people I am paid to help are happy to lie back and let it all roll over them rather than be forced to admit that they have sexy thoughts sometimes and like to find pictures that back that up.

It's all through the business. I have women who think so little of their bodies that they will buy the cheapest toy they can find, made out of a rubber that will leak acetone into their bodies, rather than admit that their cunt is a beautiful thing and needs to be treated with the same regard as the rest of their bodies. Who buy something tiny so they don't frighten their boyfriends.

The men who buy pornography for their heterosexual wives, and who with little variation start with lesbian movies, "because it's gentler." Never mind that two girls is not likely to be a strong turn on for a woman heterosexual enough to marry, and then be too shamed out to tell him what she wants to see in a movie, let alone come pick her own porn; somewhere in his head it's less confronting - for him, who deep in his soul can't imagine his little woman wanting to ogle good looking men the way he ogles good looking women. I won't start with the disbelief when I suggest gently that maybe his het wife would like some strapping lads to look at.

I guess what's killing is the general all pervasive attitude that Sex is a Bad Thing. I am so very glad that I spend most of my time in the Valley store, because despite having to shoo heroin dealers out of my car-park and the occasional drunken turd in the driveway it is easily the most body positive of all the chain. I talk to a lot of queer folk, and the whole process of coming out does tend to make one think long and damn hard about sex in general, and while there are a lot of queer people of all stripes who are going to be fucked up about sex it's this odd thing I've noticed where being made to question the dominant narrative about the birds and the bees makes one more prone to questioning the other stuff, too. So I get to talk to queer girls about their strap-ons, and it's a sensible conversation about a tool for a job, not a Dirty Little Secret that I'm contaminating them with. More people buying for themselves, not "for a friend" or for a partner too shamed to come in for themselves. Go to Taringa, say, and it's all coy straight uni students who want vibrators smaller than their boyfriends' cocks so he doesn't get frightened and things to make her come easier so he has to do less work. Pale condom buyers and old men from out Chelmer way who talk to my tits and call me "love" and treat me like an idiot.

It's wearing me down. I'm in about the best place I can be in this business and still there are days when I want to phone in dead. Compound that sex-neg rubbish with the rest of the horror that comes from working retail and it's a lesser miracle that I'm coherent at all. I just need to get. Out.

And then I have to try not to strangle the chirpy folk who assure me that man, I must have a great job, talking about sex all day, wow! Must be fun to work in a place like this.

Anyway. All things in time. One day I will look back in bewilderment at the things I got up to in my twenties, warts and all.

I'm writing sporadically, but it's tough thing to relax enough to hear my muse when there's so much quotidian bullshit to wade through. I have a few well developed little characters niggling at me now, whispering in my ear and demanding attention. This is a great motivator. The Angel has been following me again, a mixed blessing because she's a character who was once described to me as "a being made out of sadness", and her voice is tinged with my own resigned discontent at the way of the world. I identify with her the most when I am most displeased with the universe, and if you've made it this far you'll have picked up I'm rather displeased indeed. But she has interesting friends, and young Judith has been wandering along in her shadow, making interesting shapes in fabric of that particular reality. I'm still working it out somewhat, because it's got a strong Judeo-Christian flavour to it and most of my universes are powerfully and decidedly polytheistic. In the words of the master, it’s one thing saying you’ve got the best god, but saying it’s the only real one is a bit of a cheek. So nutting out how it all works is a delightful distraction, and even as I type this I can feel her shifting disapprovinglyy in her seat back there in the galleries of my mind, half a frown on her face - a sort of pre-Babel 'bish please' moment.

Most will think it's a bit mental to talk of her moving like that, as if she were a real person or a voice in my head. The authors in the room know what I'm talking about.

I've got a couple of good game groups going on, mostly olde skool Vampire: the Masquerade and Warhammer 40K, with the odd bit of GURPS thrown in for variety. I'm still playing Rachael, for all your HoD refugees out there, and she's if anything become more herself. Take that as you will, though she has developed an odd fondness for tiny dogs and big cigars. My 40K characters are at either ends of the spectrum - a sanctioned Imperial Psyker working in the demon-smashing chapter and an exiled Rogue Trader noblewoman fiercely trying to rebuild her father's crumbled empire. They would hate one another's guts if they ever met.

I've been sewing a lot too, and have big plans for the Bloodlust Ball coming up at the end of the month. I just have to find time to do it all. Something red. I think. I have a mountain of scrap from my various projects that I am looking forward to smashing together in pleasing ways.

My thirtieth birthday is in February, roughly the same time the lease runs up here. It's going to be an interesting six months. I'm going to complicate them further by running a club night instead of throwing a thirtieth birthday party. I'm yet to finalize anything but I should really get my arse into gear and book a venue. No clue where yet. My heart wants the Alliance but it's just not on the cards. Probably somewhere suitably divey in the Val I can go to town on. Apparently they're applying for a new liquor license for the downstairs bar at Rockerfellers and I have been pleasingly hammered enough times down there for it to appeal by I'm hardly sold. That's a rough stretch of road these days after 2am or so. I've been consistently impressed by the service at the Trans, though I'd rather it not be "just another goth night at the Trans", likewise St Paul's which is another lovely venue that has become something of the default. I don't know. Really it would be most sensible to go somewhere with a proven record but my recalcitrant desire to be different always kicks in and I wind up wondering what the deposit would be to get Cloudland.

I have to be awake in four and a half hours, so I think that will have to do.

This morning I washed my hair, and managed to get a pea-sized blob of medicated anti-dandruff shampoo in my right eye. Stupid Lizard Brain made me blink, and Lo! There was much wailing, as the blob dissolved into my eye juices and started medicating my corneas. It took me a good twenty minutes to coax Lizard Brain into letting me open the eye to flush the fucker, and even then most of the frothy badness just slurped over into my left eye, rendering me largely blind for the better part of my morning.

This pretty much set the tone for my day.

Over the following 12 hours or so, I lost yet another member of staff (who is being stolen back to the store she came from for their Valentine's Day Rush) and my Thursday night guy bailed on me because he has to go and watch his aunt die of cancer. I really feel for the guy, since he was clearly distressed over the phone. I wouldn't dream of making him come into work at the moment, so I now have an 8 hour shift tomorrow instead of a 5 hour shift. The ceiling in the DVD room started leaking yerky oozewater all over my DVDs, and I recieved a substantial amount of stock that was ordered by Metal Manager like, a year ago, that we do not need and that is eating into the bulk of this month's purchasing budget, leaving me unable to afford a whole bunch of important and saleable stuff. In said stock were 36 leaky bottles of Ansell Liquid, which the observant among you will recall brings me out in welts. I discovered the leaky bottles with my hand. Then some dude traipsed gravel over my carpet. Then the guy I was really keen on hiring never showed for the interview. The fail continued with a bus that never showed, leaving me standing in the rain for 45 minutes before I declared it a lost cause and got a cab home, which is nowhere near as winful as one would think because it meant I didn't go by World Food Cafe on the way home, and therefore am without sushi. Also, I have a urinary tract infection. Thought you'd need to know that. Exacerbated by this morning's g-string, an unfortunate state of affairs brought on a total absence of clean knickers. Last time I did washing, the machines at the laudromat gave a less than stellar performace and most of my delicates were left in a less than delicate state. Being less than thrilled with this I picked up some new cheapies from Target on the way in, cheap knickers being an easy pick-me-up, but tucked in with the half-dozen so scanties were size 16 pair that some colour-blind cretin had hung on a size 10 hanger. Our staff problems may mean I miss out on going to Junket, the massive 3 day convention that our key supplier holds every year, repleate with parties and porn stars flown in for the occasion. Which will really, really bite, as it's in Melbourne this year and I was going to take three days off while I was down there just to chill with Tris and my Aunt Jen, who is crazy fun, and both of whom I miss terribly.

Usually this is the point in a rant where I shout "BUT!", then come up with a half a dozen good things to look forward to, but all I can think of at the moment is that I had [livejournal.com profile] exaktica to blether at all day (and blether I did), and the bit where our suppliers sent us 12 bottles of Normans 2003 Encounter Bay Shiraz, a surprisingly old wine compared to the disturbingly recent white they sent for Christmas. Honestly, I'm a bit over everything at the moment. My run of fail has been surprisingly consistent ever since the shop flooded, so I can only hope that it's just about finished and I can get on with life.

Incidentally, I don't suppose anyone out there in LJ land with a size 16 booty wants a matching pair of soft cotton panties? I cannot be arsed taking them back to Target to swap, so if you want them they're yours. Pretty comfy style - t-shirt cotton with broad, fabric wrapped elastic, black with red trim or red with black trim, and a bug on one and the legend "Don't Bug Me" on the other. Purchased because that type is very comfy.

Urk.

Between the shop at the Valley and the one at Annerley, I've done about 56 hours this week. That's also not counting the travel, including four hours to get to and from a training session on Tuesday. If you add that in, I've spent about 62 hours doing workness.

I feel like I have been run over by a lorry. I know now in detail where all the wee little joints in my toes are, because they hurt like hell. I know where all the floaty bones are in my wrists.

On the plus side, I should be able to buy a small island come pay day.

Went To Dr. Sketchy's on Saturday. I took me some cider, and it was a Good Thing. In fact, the whole damn thing is a Good Thing. I heartily recommend it to all my artier-fartier type buddies. Speaking of which, for the fellow Art Monkies that were there on Saturday, the Dr. Sketchy forums are here and the LJ community is here.

I made some shinies, but not as many as on opening night. On opening night I won a prize with my toaster.

Today I went to work. The air conditioner is broken and so what should have been a pleasantly even-paced day turned into a 30 degree stinker. I'm currently craving french fries, mostly for the salt, and drank about six litres of water. And I had a higher ratio of fucktards-to-friendlies than usual; I suspect that my nice regulars have been permitted to breed. At least I can rest happily in the knowledge that none of the knobs I dealt with today have been pissing in the gene pool. Except the guy that came in wearing thongs he'd drawn on his feet. That guy should have triplets and name them Wozza, Gazza and Macca. Or Chazza, Shell and Tiana. Whichever works.

Dear Maggotted Shoplifter;

If you're going to try and steal a penis pump, at least try and steal a nice penis pump. Why go for something trashy? Surely, if there's the chance of a sex-store related shoplifting charge showing up on your criminal record, you'd want to make damn sure it was worth the risk.

I do have to award you points for being so drunk that you evaded arrest - no way in hell was I going to stress a man with vomit on his shoes. Must be a biiiiig night for you, especially judging by the lovely way you kept gripping things to prevent going arse over. Clearly, you and your tummy are not on speaking terms, and as you gently turned green before me I figured I could let go any other material you had stashed about your pickled body in return for not getting puked on.

I can only hope that tomorrow, as you piece together your shattered memory of this obviously huge night out, there will come a moment when you vaguely remember visiting me, all chunky-like, and the fog will clear to reveal my scowling demeanour, and you will explode out of embarrassment.

Yours,
Repulsed Porninatrix.

PS: Also, may the Gods guide your car towards a RBT, not into someone else's vehicle. Ta.

It's a slow day, and my minion has bailed on me, and all you people must have had ripping nights out because there's bugger all for me to read on this flist of mine, and none of my blogs have undated since the last time, and I am LOTS BOARD LONG TIME!!

Where are you, O Lonely Horny Old Men? Where are you, shamefaced married couples? Where are you, O Neckbeard?

That's where I am, right now.
jilder: (Default)
Let's just start at the beginning, and let us use a list, for clarity:

  • Overslept. This is because my head cold has blossomed all the way down my throat and up into my ears, and I could not pull my sorry arse out of bed even after the alarm (BEEPBEEPBEEP) had been sounding for a good ten minutes. So I compensated by delaying breakfast, and wound up gnawing on some rusk-like hash browns between my buses instead of having porridge and coffee, as norm.

  • Very nearly missed my bus - I got to run down the driveway, cross Gailey Rd and slide into the stop minutes before the bus arrived, against all likelihood early.

  • Somewhere in here I got an SMS from my mother, letting me know my sister, whom I escorted around the city yesterday as a birthday treat, has head lice, and had probably infected me during yesterday's prolonged ambulations.

  • My connecting bus, in contrast to the first one, was 15 minutes late, making me late for work. And my ticket wouldn't read properly.

  • Ambling up the hill to the shop, I thought to myself, "'Surely the worst is over. Work is predictably dull on a Wednesday. I can rest and regroup." This would be the point I spotted the large bottle of urine in the car-park. That was a fun thing to remove, especially since the gloves the manager insisted I wear left a little welt around my wrist.

  • I also had my most exciting allergic skin reaction to date, thanks to this stuff which, when tested for slickness on my fingertips, went from cold jelly to burnination in about two seconds. Even after I washed it off the creases in my fingers still burned and things were starting to swell. I took an antihistamine to stop the reaction, but antihistamines are cruel to girls who are sleep deprived, and I spent the rest of the afternoon in a bit of a daze.

  • Cue spacey work day where nothing happened. The vacuum cleaner and the air con at the shop are both broken, which makes the place a great hot dusty box. My poor throat chose this moment to close completely. I can't talk. It hurts to swallow. I can't even manage water without a fair bit of suffering. And it just got worse and worse, tighter and tighter.

  • All my customers came in just on 7pm, when I am at my most mute, and one of the wanted me to explain transsexualism to him. He was genuinely and open-mindedly curious, and it was depressing I had to reduce it to three small breathy sentences followed by a "I'm got to close now, okay?" I got out the door of the shop at 7:35pm, because the money was funny and no-one would leave until at least ten past. This meant I did not have time to get any sushi on the way through the city, which is one of my favourite laz dinners.

  • A posse of Brazilian tourists decided to practice their conversational English in the stairs of the bus going home, counting out their change one coin at a time, then trying to haggle with the driver, leaving me standing outside in the cold with my prepaid tickets and my baby headache for company.

  • I spent the half-hour between 8:30 and 9 with my head soaking in a thick chemical syrup, and the half-hour between 9 and 9:30 pulling tiny lifeless bodies out of my hair. At least that last one was a repeat, and I haven't passed the crawlies onto the housemates.

  • Also, Wired has killed my favourite blog.

I've had to get the day off work tomorrow, since I can't talk at all. I can't talk. Me. Go on, laugh. I'm very unpopular with the manager at Taringa, but this is pretty much the only thing that will render me unable to do my job. I'm useless in there right now, as tonight's piss-poor effort proved. So I'm going to alternate between sleep and ritual gargling, and if that doesn't fix it I'll have to hie myself to the doctor. I've taken pain meds for the headache, and I can feel them setting nicely into place. But I'm not going to assume it's going to get better from here on in - last time I did that, someone left a half a litre of piss out in the sun for me.

Six Things That Will Irritate Your Friendly Local Porninatrix:
(Do I have to preface this with "Some Links Not Safe For Work, Children or The Emotionally Fragile? No? Good.)

I know people often use these little techniques to feel safer talking about sex. I understand that. And I deal with dozens of people, every day, who do these things because they're not comfortable with what they're wanting to do with their bodies. And in a way it depresses me, because if you've come to a point in your life when you want to stuff two inches of rubber in your bung-hole, really, you'd want to be at least a little bit comfortable with it. But just as it's your body, it's your discomfort, and I'm okay with leaving it at that.

But it gets to me when people insist that their restrictive experience of sex must be exactly the same as everyone else's, and insist on trying to wedge the shop and my expertise into the same boxes. The discomfort becomes apparent as soon as it's obvious that there's more out there in the world than they've ever done, and it makes them uncomfortable. Some people embrace it, others ignore it, but the people that irritate me are the ones who want to change my mind so they don't have to open their own. All the repetitive questions are seeking confirmation that their biases are just the way everything is and always will be. Normal toys! Just like the ones everyone else has! No fags, 'cause sex is all manly and shit! And there couldn't possibly be anything they don't already know! That, that thing I don't recognize, that must be for freaks and weirdos! And no way that young chick with too many rings and no makeup knows jack shit about this stuff! She can't know more than me. Because the only sex there is ever in the whole world is the sex I'm having, and that's the only sex there should be.

And that's what pisses me off the most.

There is a huge possum sytematically checking every window in the house. I've kicked it out of the kitchen, the living room and the computer room so far, and each time I wind up hauling my arse out of bed just as I start to drift off.

I have to open tomorrow. So I'm sitting here, waiting for Poss to check the last unchecked window, which unfortunatly happens to be one with a faulty latch, and no way of effectively locking the fucker out.

Grr.

I've just looked up at the tiny thermometer above my desk. It is apparently 37 degrees Celsius right at this very moment. The humidity is a mystery, but given the happy little beads of sweat rolling down my leg for the wild, free life of a puddle, I'd say it's pretty high. I have rather a lot to do today:

  • I must unpack and arrange the living room. All my books are still packed, one month after we moved in! Horror! This involves moving furniture about in the front room of the house, which is windowed all the way round and faces west. Hurray.

  • Either work out how to make my flash drive work, or face the prospect of typing out all my clips. There's no point in trying to apply for grown-up writerley work unless I have those bastards to prove that people have, in the past, paid me to string a sentence together. Not helping is my PC's tendency to pout in hot weather.

  • Scrub out and then re-fill Nero's tank. I bought him some beautiful plants a while back, which lasted two glorious weeks before dying and decomposing pretty much overnight into an oozing purple mass. It was quick enough to surprise me, and it sure as hell surprised Nero, who I caught trying to sit on a leaf that was little more that slime held in place by laziness. I now know the difference between true aquatics and aquarium friendly plants.

  • Clip and post photos of [livejournal.com profile] dragarnuss' tattoos. They are very pretty. But I am very lazy.

  • Do the washing. Sounds great, till you factor in the walk to the laundromat.

  • Find a new job.

  • Excoriate the loo and round up the hairballs currently colonizing the house for extermination.

I also wanted to make pancakes, but this was before I left the darkness of the bedroom. Our kitchen resembles the Martian surface right now, right down to the mysterious grit on the floor and the possibility of microbial life. As it is, I think dinner may be frozen soup on a stick.

You are not Bruce Campbell.

Put down the chainsaw, fuck off and let me have my Monday morning sleep-in.

And really, I mean it about dropping trees onto our roof. Just don't do it.

You're just going to hurt yourself.
Not You.

Today I bought some prickly pears. I bought them purely because I couldn't identify them at the fruit shop; this is all the logic I need when it comes to crazy fruit. A lady in the queue with me at Fruity Capers assisted in the identification, since the checkout chick didn't know either. Mystery Fruit! Totally the best thing in the world! I tend to be pretty adventurous with my food, and I love trying out new things. I got three in the box, and squinting at them under the hard fluro lights of the grocer's I noticed a bunch of little stumps, where I presumed the kind prickly pear pickers pruned any protrusions promptly upon picking.

I was ready. I took them home and thought of sinking my choppers into the glorious gooey red heart of the pear. They smelled marvellous - somewhere between a peach and a raspberry.

Me: "Look! I bought prickly pears! Isn't that nifty?"
The Man: "That's not really food."
Me:"Sure it is!"

He was right though. IT'S A WEAPON! I made the mistake of picking it out of the container with my bare hands. Those pernicious prickly pear pickers are pricks! They left all the little spines on it, and they are INVISIBLE to the naked eye. My whole hand became riddled (and still is!) with tiny, clear needles filled with pain. And you can't get the bastards out, either. I wound up covering the palm of my hand with packing tape, trying fruitlessly (ha!) to remove them from my quivering flesh the same way you'd take cat hair off a jacket. IT'S NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL!!!

So once I stopped cursing Arseholious, the God of Heavily Protected Fruit, I delicately wrapped half of the pear in packing tape, and using a paring knife carefully peeled away the exposed skin. Then, occasionally stopping for abortive spine removal attempts with some of The Man's old tweezers, I sliced off a few slivers of flesh.

I was not impressed.

IF you insist of fortifying a piece of fruit to the extent that it causes WELTS in unsuspecting consumers, and furthermore, IF you make the fortifications the biological equivalent to fraying fibreglass, AT LEAST make the fruit itself so tasty that one is willing to risk the loss of life and limb attendant to eating it. DON'T make it bland, faintly reminiscent of watered down strawberries and certainly don't make it full of tiny bits of gravel.*

I can't even get rid of them in the same way I usually dispose of fruit that has displeased me. The last thing I want is the possums spreading cactus seed from here to the uni. So, I cannot exact any sort of revenge. I HAVE BEEN THWARTED BY FRUIT!!!

I despise you, prickly pears.

*Okay, so a plant only fruits to seed. But do you really think it needs that many seeds?
