Hey all. I'm updating my book lending list. It reads something like:

allergy_eleven probably has Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, although any other Louises reading this who have a copy mysteriously on their shelves, gimmie a yell.

poisongirll has a big sack of books, seven or eight. I can drop you the list if you like.

captainflux may have all my Pirates books - I know you have The Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists, but I'm not certain about the others and I can't find the bloody things. I recall you borrowing Paul Carter's Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs, She Thinks I'm a Piano Player in a Whorehouse at ikiller's birthday party, but I don't rightly recall what else you have. There was a fair wad at New Year's, but I can't remember what exactly was in it.
n838o, where were you up to with the Pratchetts? I recall giving you Mort, but it's back and I have no idea what you took instead.
miss_sol, I recall you mentioning that you wanted to read one of my Gaiman's, or you were reading, or something. This would have been after a Sunday night of Winey Boozeness, so forgive me if it's a bit vague. All my Gaiman seems to be there, however - did you wind up borrowing anything, and if so, what?
Most notably I'm missing Tom Holt's Only Human and A Song For Nero, Pratchett's Wee Free Men and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents as well as Pilo Family Circus. I think that's it.
All books leave my hands with my name jotted down in the front; if there's no name it's either not mine or I don't care if it comes back. I really do want those Pratchett's back, since they're hardcovers and I'm still hurting from the more than likely loss of The Monstrous Regiment.I've made a few pleas about the last one and it hasn't surfaced, so I'm thinking the move monster stole it, or housemates of whoever borrowed it last may have nicked off with it, or something. Maybe bees ate it. Who knows? But since the last ten or so Pratchetts I've bought in hardcover, and want to keep in hardcover, it's not sort of loss I want to see become common. I love loaning books out - I can't help wanting to spread the love that is provided by a good book. But I also like to get them back, so they can go on to other friends.
I really need to get my shit together and actually keep proper tabs on these guys. I think the time has come to do that olde-schoole card-pocket thing that my primary school did when I was in Grade One. They had a little card in the front of every book, meticulously hand-typed, and when you signed up to the library you would get issued an envelope that would have your name and grade on it, which lived in the library in a little rack. When you borrowed a book the librarians would take the card out of the book and put it in your envelope, so they knew what you had. I think that will be just the ticket. It will require the purchase of quite a bit of stationary, of course, but I think I can cope with that.
Lemme know if you've got 'em, or what.

Yup, I'ma busy little beaver today! Can you tell I'm at the South Pole and reluctant to return to my own home? Could it be because it's appallingly bright outside today, and my sunglasses are so named in the same fashion as sunrooms, sunflowers and sunbeds? Could it be??
In other news, I'm good at losing things. It's a skill. Most people get though life without wandering through their flat at more or less random times going "Hey, where did my [thingy] go?" I rarely actually need the thingy in question. It's usually prompted by a long spooling train of free association. For instance, I realised my copy of Grace was gone after listening tobjoose rabbit on about how poor an actor a mutual friend is. Don't ask what prompted me to post this today, when there are still so many whacked news stories floating around.
So, onto the new list!

Terry Pratchett's "Monstrous Regiment", which I think you may have been reading when I moved out of the HoDII. I could be wrong, though - that period has dissolved in my memory into a sticky puddle of greif and generic unpleasantness. I don't actually mind if you still have it, 'cause the world is improved by the distribution of good books, but I do like to keep tabs on these things. In any case, I'm the type of geeb who writes her name in the front of all her books, so if the name is there, it's mine.
Also AWOL:
All My Vegetarian Cookbooks, by various hipsters and Earth Mothers. These are probably packed with some of the HoDII kitchen stuff, and consequently unlikely to see the light of day until all previous Hodlings are rehoused. A pity, since the Earth Mother one has a great recipie for gnocci in it.
VAST's Visual Audio Sensory Theatre: Another No Biggie, since I have listened to the album that many times that I can whistle it, if I have a back-up deck and a copy of Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares. I've only lost the disc itself,but having foreseen dificulties with disc identification way back in the days of the Northgate Asylum (where practically everyone who passed through the doors of the joint had a copy at some point) mine has a big letter j on it. For Jilder! Yay!
My glasses' case, with my last pair of sunglasses tucked inside. They were hangover-level sunnies - reflective glass so dark it was akin to having your head inside a bucket. Right now, the loss is a'hurtin'. Or it will when the inevitable need to head to the Slanty Shanty arises. It's a black case with an orange polihing cloth in it, and of course the sunnies. And I have no idea where it is.
So, anyone seen my stuff?

Mar. 22nd, 2005 02:03 pmI have the sick, the sick that eternaldark brought home from her workplace. It has made my brain...odd. So odd, that rather than doing productive things like, oh, say, thinking up bits for my book or my Cardboard Series (more on that later), it has been compulsivly wondering where all my roaming books are.
I am missing:
Monstrous Regiment, by Terry Pratchett.twitchfetish, did I loan this one to you at the same time as the Feegle Series? I don't rightly recall.
Angels and Visitations, by Neil Gaiman. Haven't the foggiest who this went to. It's in hardcover, too, so I really would like to know where it is.
The Discworld Companion, by Stephen Briggs and Terry Pratchett.willxkempt, did you wind up with that one after the move? I don't mind if you're still using it, just keen to find out where it went.
A Silver Thread of Madness by Jessica Amanda Salmonson. It's a rather skinny collection of short stories, all of them either deranged or macabre. Unfortunatly, I don't recall if I even lent it out - it was at the HoD I for a bit, but then we moved, and it could be anywhere by now. Most distressing is the fact that it isn't even mine. It's Eva's, and she loves it to bits. It'd be a shame if I couldn't get it back to her, 'specially since she's holding my copy of The Princess Bride as hostage till she gets it back.
There's also a few books missing from my middle shelf (the one where books go if they are good, but not good enough for the top shelf. Also home to my YA and kids' books) and some from my Lit. shelf (old classics, books on liturature and culture). I haven't a clue what's gone, but if you remember borrowing something, or books show up that you don't remember buying, have a look on the front inner flyleaf. I always put my name in there, so if you check and it's there, hurray! You're found one of mine! That goes for the above, too, and especially Monstrous Regiment, since the HoD owns collectivly about three copies, I believe.
